Totally Dublin Weekender | January 10-12

Posted January 8, 2014 in More

So it’s the first ‘real’ weekend of the year and we’re probably all still licking our festive wounds a little, imagining what it would be like to go to the gym and convincing ourselves that half bottle of red wine didn’t really count and we’re still off the booze – but the cultural happenings in Dublin stop for no well-meaning soul. With that in mind, here’s our plan for the upcoming weekend:

12 Years A Slave

To say this Steve McQueen joint is generating a bit of Academy award buzz is like saying that the sun is a bit warm. 12 Years A Slave is an historical piece based on the autobiographically documented experiences of Solomon Northup, born a “free negro” in the 19th century who is kidnapped and put into slavery. Featuring a stellar cast of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup alongside fellow so-hot-right-nows Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch as well as a cameo from producer Brad Pitt, 12 Years A Slave has received near-universal acclaim from both critics and audiences upon its’ release in the States both for the quality of the performances and McQueen’s ability to remain unflinching in the face of difficult subject matter.

12 Years A Slave opens in the IFI, Lighthouse and other cinemas this Friday 10th January

Cass McCombs

Two Saturdays into the year might be a bit early to be warming up the gig of the year shouts, but any regular reader of these pages will know just how obsessed we are with the mysterious Mr. McCombs. Last year’s double helping of “black-humoured, fathomless miscellany”, Big Wheel and Others, was one of our favourite record of 2013, and given our previous experiences of the McCombs magic in Whelans and Grand Social on his last visits, those attending the Workman’s will be getting a show that mixes up the sweetest strains of Americana and rock’n’roll mythology with one of the world’s greatest songwriters.

Saturday 11 January, Workman’s Club,  €16.50, 8pm – tickets available here

The Anatomy of Liverpool: An Evening with Jonathan Wilson, Scott Murray, hosted by John Keith

Following on from recent successful events based around the wonderful soccer nerd’s handbook Blizzard and Sid Lowe’s Fear And Loathing In La Liga comes another event from Con Artist at the Sugar Club, this time based around Jonathan Wilson’s new book with Scott Murray, The Anatomy Of Liverpool: A History In Ten Matches which attempts to use specific focus on crucial moments in Liverpool FC’s history to tell their story from an outsider’s perspective (Wilson is a lifelong Sunderland fan), rather than the traditional historical narrative from died-in-the-wool reds. While naturally less inclusive than previous events despite Liverpool’s enduring popularity in Ireland, Wilson is one of the football world’s most revered journalists for his work on both tactical elements of the game (Inverting The Pyramid) and historical biographies (Brian Clough: Nobody Ever Says Thank Youand is worth the admission even if perennial shouts of “this is our year” send a nasty shiver down your spine. The event will also screen one of 8 matches featured in the book in full (including Istanbul and the Five-Nil match against Nottimgham Forest), with an audience vote on the night.

Sunday 12 January, Sugar Club, €12 / €30 (with a signed hardback copy of the book) – full details here and tickets available here
