The Dublin Riot – What Happened? By I Nua playwrights in Axis Ballymun This Saturday

Posted 1 month ago in Theatre Features

One year on The Dublin Riot – What Happened? captures the raw emotions and experiences from the night of the Dublin Riots in November 2023 through a series of theatrical performances presented in Axis Ballymun.

The riots, a boiling point in contemporary Irish society, sparked conversations amongst the I Nua playwrights, about the importance of creating and performing stories that reflect these turbulent times that will be noted in history

Audiences will take a journey through ten different perspectives of The Riots through theatre, prose, poetry and performance.

These pieces are rooted in personal, autobiographical experiences – a direct response to the riots, offering a provocative and timely reflection on this painful event.  The curation will ensure a dynamic and thought-provoking evening that looks set to resonate with audiences on multiple levels..

The I Nua collective is composed of a diverse group of playwrights who are also actors, directors and producers, each bringing a unique perspective shaped by their varied backgrounds.

Some of the playwrights whose work will be performed on the night include Lisa Walsh, a working class playwright from Ballymun, award winning actor, screenwriter and voice over artist Paddy C. Courtney, Adam Mohamed an Irish-Sudanese poet/musician/artist from Ballymun, seasoned actress, drama facilitator and director Betty Duffy, as well as IFTA nominated actor & emerging writer Lesley Conroy.

Speaking ahead of the event, I Nua member Lesley Conroy said, “The collegiate atmosphere among the creatives involved, and the energy behind the collaborative process over the past few months, supported by The Lab and Axis, reminds me of my drama school days and has rekindled a fire in me for theatre. I’ve loved directing ‘Mary and Billy’ and ‘The Dance of Life’ which is a new venture for me and is has allowed me to expand my practice beyond acting and writing. I Nua are a force to be reckoned with and I feel we’re at the start of a very exciting journey.’”

Audience numbers are limited so booking early is essential. This event will include walking and standing for audiences.
