LCD Soundsystem’s forthcoming third album is one of the most eagerly awaited records of the year. It now finally has a name: ‘It’s Happening’, a cover, and a lead-off single in the shape of Drunk Girls, which has been causing something of a stir in internet-land over the last week. A new album taster hasn’t been so divisive since, erm, MGMT’s Flash Delirium a few weeks ago.
As for the song itself, it’s an upbeat staccato dance number allied to sarky observational lyrics, and thus not what one might call a radical departure. It’s arguably initially quite grating, which would explain a fair amount of the bad reaction, but after a while that does settle down, and the latter half of the song takes off quite nicely. Lyrically, Murphy employs the same deadpan dismissiveness as ever; “Drunk girls are boringly wild”, and musically the song seems to be a hybrid of the first and second albums, without really improving on either. Word has it that it’s one of the weaker songs on the album. Fingers crossed for that.
