Look, coming over the hill! It’s a load of hyped January bands defending the honour of Gay Dad! By making the BBC Sound of 2011 short Anna Calvi certainly seems to be making the right moves not to mention apparent big-ups from Brian Eno and Nick Cave. Jezebel is the seven inch fronting up the forthcoming self-titled debut with a raucous garagey stomp melded to Anna’s impressive pipes. It’s a rattling cover of a song made famous by Edith Piaf as if to lend weight to the annoying soundbyte (“Its Nina Simone meets PJ Harvey!”) but frankly I enjoyed the b-side she penned herself much more. Still we’re more willing to give this a repeated chance because its on Domino and we trust their judgment.
