Perfect Pussy
Say Yes To Love
[Captured Tracks]
Emerging from Captured Track’s ever growing stable of mid-table indie success comes Perfect Pussy’s first full-length release and it is perhaps the most vital and immediate record released thus far this year. Drawing heavily on the established tropes of brutal, driving hardcore without being beholden to their restrictions, within moments the Syracuse five-piece manage to carve out a recognisable sound all of their own.
For a record that finds no small amount of its appeal in its wild, running-on-all-cylinders unpredictability, Say Yes to Love is also a masterwork of subtle construction. Each feedback squall adds something or other, the piercing guitar and keyboard jabs almost making up a bizzaro melody of their own. Elsewhere, the ambient interludes that punctuate the record create a queasy uncertainty that only serves to highlight the clarity of purpose apparent on the record’s more wide-eyed, poppy moments.
Aside from the fact they are making genuinely interesting punk music from an instrumental perspective, Perfect Pussy’s key weapon is undoubtedly frontwoman Meredith Graves whose lyrical frankness and strikingly impassioned delivery are so genuinely affecting we won’t even hold her inevitably irksome Tumblr celebrity against her. Clocking in at a meagre 23 minutes Say Yes to Love is the sort of record you play on repeat without really realising you’ve been listening to nothing else for days. Brilliant, joyous, essential stuff. – Danny Wilson
