Legendary stoner metal progenitors Sleep are bringing their on-going reunion tour to Dublin to celebrate of the re-issue of their drop-tuned psychedelic masterpiece Dopesmoker (The date of release? 4/20, obviously). Always emphasizing the “stoner-” aspect of their work more than most, the three piece took the heavy, post-Sabbath riffs of classic metal and shot them into some skull-crushing version of Homer Simpsons’s chili trip in the desert. With the members having gone on to vital work with bands like High On Fire and OM (new record on the way!), it’s easy now to see Sleep – and Dopesmoker specifically – as an important touchstone in the continued textural development of metal music. This gig promises to be quite the trip in itself.
