Lute and plunder: Jozef Van Wissem

Posted September 29, 2014 in Gig Previews

Jozef van Wissem | Whelans | Wednesday 1 October | €12, 8pm

Jim Jarmusch’s entry into the vampire flick genre, Only Lovers Left Alive is brought to life this Wednesday in as the most famous lutenist since Martin Prince, composer Jozef van Wissem, takes to the stage of Whelans to recreate the soundtrack to the Tilda Swinton-starring film. Aside from composing the score of Sims Medieval, van Wissem has also picked up the Best Score gong at the Cannes Film Festival for his contribution to the Jarmusch flick, where his haunted lute riffs mixed space with SQÜRL and Zola Jesus amongst others to create a hazy stoner rock/folk crossover that is particularly choice. Aside from the live music at this U:mack event, there’ll also be a Q + A session on soundtrack composition with van Wissen hosted by none other than our own editor-at-large (and Darklight Film Festival doyen) Daniel Gray. Highly recommended.

Tickets cost €12 and are available at WAV Box Office and on the door. Further details here or visit JVW’s website here.
