Bursting out of Edinburgh with a fresh take on folk that is more Planxty than Mumford, Lau are three Scottish men, a fiddle, a guitar and a squeezebox. Sounds simple on the surface but in practice they craft bewitchingly brilliant melodies and harmonies from their ancient instruments with such grace and skill that Channel 4 only went and called them “the best band in the world right now”. Solemn atmospheres give way to raucous stomps and moments of elation. The passion these men have for what they do is obvious as they twist centuries of folk art into something in their own image, something that is indefinably and unarguably now.
