In techno lore, the Belleville three operate at something approaching mythical status. They are the originators, the innovators, the ones who made everything that came next possible. Alongside Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins, Derrick May forged a new sound from the belly of Detroit’s grim surroundings. Then he gave us ‘Strings Of Life’, one of the bona fide classics of the genre, a track that exploded across clubs at the end of the 80s, and still has the power to send a dancefloor into raptures.
It’s been almost twenty years since he’s released any solo material but his DJing retains all the freshness and vitality of his early days. His set on Saturday is due to be a four-hour journey into the hi-tek soul world of a true innovator.
