DRAFF

DRAFF Exhibition

Thursday 14 – Thursday 21 May | 5 Dame Lane | Free

It can take months, and sometimes years, to make a show for the stage. Just exactly what are those artists doing in all those hours, minutes and seconds of research and development? Quite a bit, it turns out. DRAFF: an exhibition lifts the lid on the performing arts scene in Dublin with a vibrant display of the material that’s hidden away in the notebooks, and brains, of stage artists. A multimedia exhibition taking place from 14th to 21st May at 5 Dame Lane, that is incorporating sound, visuals and objects, it’s a rare insight into the creative process of theatre and dance makers. DRAFF: an exhibition is supported by Dance Ireland and Léargas in partnership with Irish Design 2015 and Dublin Dance Festival and the exhibition will also introduce the Dublin public to the DRAFF concept ahead of the launch of their free print magazine later this year.

THE VAN

Happenings: The Van screening

Thursday 14 May | Dalymount Park | €5, film starts at sundown

Cancelled from earlier in the month, this special screening of the film adaptation of Roddy Doyle’s World Cup ’90 influenced Barrytown tale The Van takes place in the extremely suitable surroundings of Dalymount Park. The film starts when the sun goes down so wrap up warm and bring out everything you bring in with you. As usual, it’s weather-dependent so keep an eye on happenings.ie or their FB page for updates.

Potion of Oblivion 3: Come Dance and Say Yesssss

Friday 15 May | Block T | 8pm, €7

One of the last opportunities we’ll have to dance in the downstairs of Block T is the third edition of Potion of Oblivion, a monthly-ish DJ club from Neil O’Connor or Somadrone along with Gib Cassidy (of Girls Names and Elastic Witch notoriety) and Peter Symes (of Skinny Wolves). They’ll be exploring the last 50 years or so of electronic music with a mixture of krautrock, cold-wave, cosmic disco and genuine avant garde weirdness, all in support of Marriage Equality.

FIERCE MILD

Fierce Mild EP Launch

Friday 15 May | The Grand Social | €10, 8pm

Fierce Mild mark their first release, topically titled Yes n Yes n Yes with Little Gem Records, with a launch gig in the Grand Social. Fierce Mild’s game is noisy, chatty, fun post-punk sound inspired by Riot Grrl legends like Heavens To Betsy. Support on the night comes from Sissy with their politicised hardcore, along with L/B/W and Ewa Gigon.

JAM CITY

Jam City

Saturday 16 May | Upstairs at Whelan’s | 8pm, €11

Jack Latham, better known as Jam City, will be visiting Whelan’s on the back of his second album Dream A Garden. While his debut, Classical Curves, was a shock treatment of discarded and distorted club sounds rendered like the soundtrack to a dystopian future, Dream A Garden added vocals and lusher instrumental timbres. Support on the night comes from Soil Creep.
