We’re really pushing the concept of the “weekend” on this Weekender, rolling through from hump-day to the following Monday, but when there’s this much on offer, why the bloody hell not? Plus we haven’t even mentioned Longitude, The National, Phosphorescent…
Cat Power
Wednesday 16 July | Olympia Theatre | €28.90, 7pm
Chan Marshall has been through a variety of stages in her career, some more stable than others and some more interesting than others, but she’s always had that damn voice no matter what’s she sung, be it the lonesome lunar blues of *Moon Pix*, her various collections of covers, or the rhythmic shapes of 2012’s Sun. Indeed Totally Dublin can remember wildly, differing gigs from the silence and intimacy of the Douglas Hyde Gallery to a raucous night with an old school R’n’B band in the now departed Tripod. Marshall’s inimitable charm and style make her worth checking out at any stage.
Good Fridays
Friday 18 July | Block T | €10 BYOB, 8pm
Another week is coming to an end so another Good Friday BYOB in Block T seems thoroughly appropriate. This edition sees improvisers David Donohoe (synth) and David Lacey (drums) team up as Rainfear with support from Magic Pockets provided undulating synth patterns and Cholera House, providing “auditory reproductions of hollow, eviscerated craniums.” As you do. Full details here.
Summer Rising – WERK
Friday 18 July – Saturday 26 July | Irish Museum of Modern Art, Kilmainham | Various
As details in our Artsdesk pages this month, a week full of summer celebrations over at IMMA begins with the opening reception of exhibition Propositions by Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica, followed by a very special edition of THISISPOPBABY’S performance, art and club extravaganza WERK. Saturday sees the return of the Hare Café, late of Temple Bar Gallery + Studios at “Garden Rising” which is an all-day food-travaganza [difficult portmanteau] taking place in the delicious grounds of the Museum in Kilmainham. Full Summer Rising details here on their FB page and details of the WERK event are here.
Wave Forza: DUST [Live] + Alessandro Adriani
Friday 18 July | Odessa Club | €10, 10pm
Wave Forza – the young upstart, the Mario Balotelli, if you will, in the Forza stable – returns for a Friday night romp around Odessa Club, with performances from two artists on the Mannequin label, with a live performance from four-piece “phuture group” DUST and a DJ set from Alessandro Adriani. Full details of the night are available here.
Gavin Clark / The Living Room Screening
Friday 18 July | The Button Factory | €20, 7pm
A once-off event featuring a screening of Shane Meadows’ 2009 documentary The Living Room charting Meadows’ relationship with his friend on musical collaborator Gavin Clark. Meadows and Clark have intertwined for much of their lives from childhood buddies to collaborators, with the film detailing this as well of much of Clark’s career, working with Clayhill and UNKLE. Following the screening there will be a performance from Clark who will be delving into a back catalogue of 20 years worth of work with the Leisure Society playing with him. There’ll also be a rare screening of Meadows’ first short Northern Soul, which follows the misadventures of Mike Sherbet on his impossible quest to become a champion of the British wrestling circuit.
Owen Pallett with Katie Kim
Sunday 20 July | Whelans | €20, 8pm
In our extremely interesting interview with Owen Pallett this month he commented “it’s the best venue in the world… When I die and go to heaven it’s going to be me playing Whelans every night.” High praise indeed, so it’s no wonder he’s back for yet another intimate gig on Wexford Street, this time supporting his totemic creation In Conflict (though he’s supporting The National in Iveagh Gardens the previous night too). Pallett’s live performances mix band performances (with Matt Smith and Rob Gordon on bass and drums respectively) and Pallett’s solo-violin and keyboard looping pieces, his phenomenal song-craft interspersed with delightfully wry self-effacement. Not to be missed.
OKO / Alarmist
Monday 21 July | Whelans | €10, 8pm
Two extremely ambitious bands with wide-ranging styles under the belts as well as tight instrumental chops, OKO and Alarmist form a double bill as part of the IMC’s summer residency in Whelans. Full details here.
