Made It: How To Get Published

Thursday 24 July | Twisted Pepper | 7pm, €10

Following the outrageous success of their How To Build An App talk in April, the Made It gang are back with some hot tips on how to become the enfant terrible of your local literary scene, or at least how to break into the words on paper game. Speakers on the night include Daniel Seery (author of A Model Partner), self-published author Paul Timoney, Nora Mahony (editor at Parkbench Publishing Services) and Stephen Shields (screenwriter at RTÉ) followed by a publishing panel of Sarah Davis Goff (Tramp Press), Michael O’Brien (O’Brien Press), Thomas Morris (editor, The Stinging Fly) and Nicki Howard (Gill & MacMillan). Limited tickets left here. PS the hot tip is “Be really good at writing” 😛

TFSR CROP

The Former Soviet Republic

Friday 25 July | The Pop Inn | 8pm, €7

The Former Soviet Republic emerge from the woodwork with a rare appearance of his one-man-and-his-gear melancholia. TFSR released a lovely little EP a couple of years ago, so new material must be on the horizon, right? Support on the night comes from loveable indie pups Me & My Dog and renowned breaststrokers Swimmers. Full details here.

Nialler9 and Mother present: The Last Days of Disco

Friday 25 July | Moxie Studios, Lad Lane | 10pm, €15 BYOB

Part of the ongoing Laya Healthcare City Spectacular, this one-off combination of Dublin’s funkiest club DJs (Mother DJs) and Ireland’s premier music blogger present an evening in tribute to the constant rising, falling and everlasting awesomeness of the art of disco music. Live sets also on the night from the freakishly funky Ships and Sligo’s Dioscó na mBó, it’s got see-through platform shoes with dead goldfish floating in them written all over it (and nothing to do with the outrageous Kate Beckinsale autotune scene in the film of the same name – can I get a witness?)

Nhar CROP

Nhar (Kompakt, Live!)

Saturday 26 July | The Hub, Eustace St., Temple Bar | 10pm, €10

Nhar produces techno and minimal house and is signed to Kompakt, which in our book gives him heaps of credibility right out the gate. His Irish debut last year came highly commended and promoters Fuzz have brought him back for a live show, taking place on Saturday night in the Hub on Eustace Street. Support on the night comes from Fuzz DJs Jeff & Manu and Tatumba, along with resident Melodic DJ Stephen Flynn. Full details of the event here

TELEPHONES

Telephones Day Time Party #2

Saturday 26 July | Pallas Project/Studios, The Coombe | 2pm €10-13

Discotekken and HSSH have teamed up for more naughty daytime nonsense in the front square of Pallas Project/Studios on the Coombe, which is, as we always remark, a fine place for a summer party. There’s DJs (John Mahon, Louis Scully, Marquis D’Alton, Sim Simma DJs and Eoin Cody), there’s brunch (scramblers with avocado, tomato chutney & candied bacon – drool) and there’s even fecking badminton. Genius. More info here, tickets here.

SUNSETS DISCO

Sunsets Disco Brunch

Saturday 26 July | The Sound Gallery, Mountjoy Square | €37, 2.30pm

A new venue with some sweet tunes from folks like Sleep Thieves, Carried By Waves and Emmet Condon taking part in a disco brunch for charity (in aid of SOAR) makes for exactly the kind of thing we give about 10 thumbs up for. For the price you get champaign and Buckfast reception (fit for royalty), Cakes by Khade of the 2014 Great Irish Bake Off, mixologists giving out cocktails and and “top class” brunch. See www.sunsets.ie for more details.

And if you’ve still got any energy left on Sunday, go for a swim.
