Ewwwwww it’s absolutely grim outside, but it’s your duty to grim it out and go culture yourself this weekend.
Cian Nugent and the Cosmos
The Joinery, Arbour Hill, Stoneybatter | Friday 31st January, 8pm, €10/€8 with Joinery membership
We’re always banging on about the excellence of Cian Nugent and in particular the record he made last year with his band the Cosmos, Born With The Caul and just because it’s 2014 it doesn’t mean we’re going to stop beating that drum. Snuggle up warm in the concrete confines of the Joinery for some swirling, lengthy folk-rock jams from the Nooge et al.
Guests on the night are Brigid Power Ryce providing atmospheric folk songs and Brian Kelly of So Cow providing witty guitar pop. A splendid line-up altogether.
Discotekken present The Jungle Book w/ Donal Dineen (DJ) and Manden Express (live)
The Sugar Club | Saturday 1st February, 8pm, €10
Indoors and outdoors (optimistic) at the Sugar Club, Discotekken are throwing a massive party with DJs, live music and a screening of the Jungle Book: in other words, so much, much more than the bare necessities, a plethora of luxuries in fact.
Aside from the wonderful Disney film, Donal Dineen will be DJing, there is live music from Manden Express (playing West African with percussion, kora) and a host of other DJs including GMOS, John Mahon and Louis Scully.
The Olympia Theatre | Sunday 2 February, 7.30pm, €27.50
A big-hitter from the realm of sombre, mysterious songwriting dudes, Bill Callahan is 20-plus years into a career that has skirted with the margins of folk-music. He began as the lo-fi, elliptical Smog producing abrasive, difficult albums, maturing eventually to 2005’s all-timer A River Ain’t Too Much To Love before ditching the nom-de-guerre and releasing records under his own name, including the excellent Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle and last year’s meditatively gorgeous Dream River. A chance to see Billo in action, even for the unaccustomed and unfamiliar is one not to pass up – he is the real deal.
Super Bowl XLVIII
The Meadowlands, Rutherford NJ | 11.30pm kick-off
Also, Peadar Kearneys, Dame St, €10
“I’m the best corner in the game. When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that’s the result you gonna get. Don’t you ever talk about me.”
It was the moment that lifted the NFC Championship Game into history, when Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman went completely WWE on Michael Crabtree after affecting the game-securing play by tapping San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s desperate throw to the endzone. This 48th Super Bowl takes place in New Jersey where it’s been snowing an awful lot people are wondering what that means – we’re also wondering. This match is all about Peyton Manning looking to secure his position in the pantheon by winning a second Super Bowl with the league’s best attack against Seattle (and the league’s best defence) trying to end a championship drought that has affected their whole city across all sporting disciplines and bring the first ever Vince Lombardi trophy to the Seahawks franchise. It’s being shown in Peadar Kearneys on Dame Street at a Super Bowl Party on massive 50″ HD screens, and all the cheese-based snacks and pseudo-controversial ad slots you could shake a stick at.
