Post-“Bank Holiday Weekend” weekends are usually a little quiet. Not so this time around, as people rail against the dying of the summer light. Not that we’ve had much summer light… Anyway, there’s bucket-loads of things to do this weekend and thankfully, a lot of them are free, or near enough. Here’s our selection of a few events worth considering.

Ginnels – Crowns Album Launch (Little Greet St. Gallery, Friday, 8pm, €10)

One of our favourite Irish (double) albums of the year gets its official launch tonight in the open space of the Little Green Street Gallery. Crowns is a self-proclaimed mess of an album, but what a glorious mess it is. Filled with charming and brief pop songs, it’s that rare beast of a double album that doesn’t overstay its welcome. The live version should be even messier, sweatier and more fun. Support comes from Skelocrats and Fuck Mountain.

National Museum 2024 – Irish

P.S. Check out the playlist Ginnels’ Mark Chester made for us today, it’s full of indie non-classics: https://www.totallydublin.ie/music/music-features/a-ginnels-guide-to-crowns/

Katie Kim & The Last Days of 1984 (Workman’s Club, Friday, 8pm, Free)

It’s not often you get to see a talent like Katie Kim for free so this gig is our pick of the weekend’s events in the Workman’s Club. Kim’s dark, rich and beautiful music takes on a whole different air in a live environment, at once more dangerous and inviting. Last Days of 1984 will provide a pleasant foil to the darkness with some tropical electronica (Tropictronica?). There’s loads more on in the Workman’s for free all weekend and you can find more details here.

Evelyn Hofer: Dublin And Other Portraits (The Gallery Of Photography, Meeting House Sq.)

Dublin and Other Portraits is a heart-breakingly intimate and empathetic exhibition of Evelyn Hofer’s photos of Dublin in 1966. Hofer captured a stunning snapshot of a city on the border between older, traditional values and the increasing influence of the modern world. Whether in colour or black and white, Hofer’s photos bring Dublin’s past to life in a uniquely affecting way. The exhibition remains open until August 31st and admission is free.

The second instalment of the annual Dublin Zine Fair takes place in the Supafast building this Saturday and Sunday, celebrating the written and self-printed word. Organised by Baby Beef, the building will be full of tables and stalls and covered in the labours of love that are modern zines. You’ll also find plenty of freesheets, magazines and other interesting printed items. Shop around, support print!

Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (The Lighthouse Cinema)

Ai Weiwei is something of a rockstar artist. His work is well known all over the world, as is his humour and his rebellious attitude towards his home country. First-time director Alison Klayman gained unprecedented access to Ai while working as a journalist in China and her documentary captured a particularly politically-charged time in the artist’s life and she brings it to screen in a detailed and nuanced fashion. Not to be missed.

Forza Italo (The Odessa Terrace, Sunday, 2pm, €5/7)

Our favourite new club night is back this Sunday for another round of Italian-themed disco, football and cocktails. This time around they’ve brought Dutch DJ David Vunk over to spin the tunes plus AC Milan vs Real Madrid from 1989 and Dario Argento’s Profondo Rosso on the big screen. It’s the perfect way to spend a Sunday.
