Buildings old and new are open for Open House Dublin in Fernhill and Ballyogan, including the Ballyogan Depot and the new Samuel Beckett Civic Campus.
FERNHILL HOUSE & GARDENS TOUR
Fernhill House and Gardens is currently undergoing redevelopment to become a regional public park, following acquisition by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. Formerly a substantial family residence, this 34 hectare site just South of the Enniskerry Road encapsulates gardens, parkland, woodland and agricultural land. Dating to around 1723, the Fernhill estate forms an important component in the makeup of the fringes of Dublin City, its elevated position providing views over Dublin Bay. Make sure to pre-book your place on the Open House Dublin tour on Sunday 15 October!
TIMBER IN THE CITY
Timber in the City : 4 projects – The use of timber in our cities is growing; globally timber is moving back to the centre in terms of structural materials simply because we can grow it and it looks great. Through 4 projects we show how timber can be used: as a complete building structure with massive timber columns, beams, and floor slabs, clad with timber facades at Ballyogan Operations and Maintenance Depot on Sunday 15 October from 2.00pm – 5.00pm; as a hybrid system of massive timber columns and beams with concrete floor slabs and cores, clad with timber facades at the Samuel Beckett Civic Campus on Sunday 15 October from 2.00pm – 5.00pm; and as a structural facade system as beams, columns, and trusses at the Elm Park Green on Saturday 14 October from 11.00am – 2.00pm and the Leinster House Welcoming Pavilion on Saturday 14 October from 11.00am – 5.00pm and Sunday 15 October from 12.00pm – 5.00pm.
Open House Dublin (OHD) invites Dublin’s citizens to explore their city as when buildings not usually accessible to the public and buildings of architectural merit open their doors over the weekend of October 13th – 15th
All architectural tours are provided by expert guides, with free admission. For full details check out openhousedublin.com The weekend is organised by Irish Architecture Foundation.
