Bake Your Loaf at Martry Mill

Posted 4 months ago in More

We’re big fans of summer day trips, mainly because it gives us a chance to get out of the city and see what’s happening in neighbouring counties. This month’s plans include heading to Martry Mill in Kells to take a look at what goes on at Ireland’s oldest working watermill.

We’re looking forward to taking part in a two and a half hour tour, which kicks off with drinks and bread tasting on arrival, followed by a baking class where participants get to make their own bread with freshly ground flour.

Then, as the loaves bake, there’s an opportunity to tour the Mill, see the millers at work, and check out the pre-industrial revolution machinery still used to make great quality wholewheat flour at Martry Mill today. We’re particularly looking forward to seeing how their old eel fishery used to work, and finding out more about how they harness the river is for power.

Afterwards,  there’s the prospect of taking home a taste of the country with that all important freshly baked loaf of brown bread.

Martry Mill, Martry, Kells, Co. Meath. 3 – 5.30pm, Thursday Aug 22nd, other dates also available. Tickets via Eventbrite cost €20 for couples and €30 (plus fees) for families/groups.
