Bitesize: March 2014

To Make: Boxty

A lot of us moan about St Patrick’s Day but, while it’s true some of the city can be hijacked by loud boozehounds, perhaps it’s time for you to reclaim St Patrick’s Day for your own. And maybe this means staying at home and watching Leap Year over a plate of boxty.

Mix about 200g of cold mashed potatoes (made from four spuds) with about 100g of self-raising flour. Add a handful of some finely chopped spring onions and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Add 150ml of buttermilk and mix until you have a thick and solid batter. Heat some butter in a large, non-stick frying pan over a low heat. Add a spoonful of your boxty mix using your spoon to shape it into a pancake. Fry for about 10 minutes on either side or until golden. Serve with bacon and eggs, put on Leap Year on the telly and rediscover the joys of St Patrick’s Day.

To Taste: The Sandwiches at 147 Deli

147 Deli on Parnell Street continues to add to the sandwich celebration this city has been enjoying for the last 12 months. We’ve always been fond of two good slices of bread stuff with something delicious but things have changed since the Hang Sangwiches of our youth. 147 Deli use Arun Bakery’s outstanding baps and sourdoughs as vessels for the tasty fillings they whip up in their kitchen fresh every day. We’re talking salmon mayo, meatball subs and Ruebens with plenty of fresh salads to choose from on the side. Keep an eye out for their daily special – the last time we visited we got juicy, spicy, slow-cooked Jamaican Jerk mutton dripping out of a toasted Arun Bakery bap. Divine. Visit them

To Visit: Brunch at Forest Avenue

We gushed about their dinner in late 2013 but our new obsession for 2014 is their five-course brunch tasting menu. €24 allows you the pleasure of lounging over expertly filtered coffee and house made pastries on arrival, followed by variations on toasted granola, smoked fish and poached eggs, meat packaged for breakfast and perhaps a rhubarb and custard dessert. The menu changes almost every week so if you’re looking for us on a Sunday, you’ll know where we’ll be. Find them on http://forestavenuerestaurant.ie.

To Try: Blend: The Spice Blend Recipe iPad App

DIT MSc Creative Digital Media students Eoin Doyle and Elizabeth May wanted to create a beautiful and useful iPad app to help organize your spice cupboard. Blend uses clever design to talk you through the world’s favourite spice and herb blends – Rogan Josh, Bouquet Garni, Thai and Jerk are all there – so that you can make your own. It includes video demonstrations on roasting and grinding, history of the spices and really beautiful images. Find them at www.blendtheapp.com and download the app for your iPad at http://bit.ly/MHyJQp.
