On display for the first time in over a decade, Netsuke are small, intricately carved sculptures originating in 17th century Japan. Originally simple button fasteners, used to secure pouches, inrō (compartmented boxes), and smoking or writing accessories to sashes, they quickly evolved to become fashion statements and platforms for intricate design and storytelling. The netsuke in Chester Beatty’s collection date from the 18th and 19th centuries and depict the twelve zodiac animals, celebrated in Japan during New Year.
These beautifully carved pieces offer insights into the animals’ symbolic meanings and their place in Japanese culture. The exhibition also creates a unique connection by exploring parallels between Japanese zodiac animals, Irish folklore and the natural sciences.
