As classics go, Toto’s Africa is up there with the very best. And it rarely goes out of fashion. Last month, The New Yorker’s Jia Tolentino wrote a Rabbit Holes column entitled: ‘The Overwhelming Emotion of Hearing Toto’s “Africa” Remixed to Sound Like It’s Playing in an Empty Mall’ which references a YouTube video (1m views) of Africa echoing “over a tilted, pink-tinged photo of an empty eighties-era shopping center—white tiles, green ferns, and mirrored windows in a ghostly neon glow.” It is debatable if any other track has brought so much joy to so many people.
