Don’t miss this chance to hear one of the world’s great jazz-driven piano trios: multi-award winning German jazz pianist Michael Wollny has exploded onto the European jazz scene in recent years, thanks to the electrifying spontaneity of his live gigs and a series of highly-acclaimed recordings. From tender, Tom Waits-esque ballads to wild rollercoaster rides, the ideas come thick and fast, each almost tripping over the last.
Like his late ACT stablemate Esbjörn Svensson, Wollny melds jazz, rock, pop and classical music into a thrillingly inventive whole, with excursions into Alban Berg, Edgard Varése, the Twin Peaks soundtrack and the Flaming Lips sitting alongside original compositions penned by the trio.
The current line-up features his long-time collaborator and fellow composer Eric Schaefer on drums, while double bass player Christian Weber was recently singled out by The Wire as being “one of the most interesting players on the European electro-acoustic improv scene”.
