Don’t feed the birds! It may seem obvious to most, but we’ve all seen good-natured people throwing crumbs and loaves at birds along the canal. Why not? Well besides bread having a low nutritional value which can stop ducks foraging for other foods, uneaten soggy bread can cause a build-up of bad nutrients, which can lead to more algae growing around water, more diseases and more pests, such as rats. As part of our Canal Bank S.W.A.L.K. summer initiative, we have commissioned Gav Connell once again to illustrate the message. There may even be some signage reminders in the coming weeks too.
