Off the back of our own PhotoIreland focus on contemporary African photography comes the Tate’s blockbuster exhibition which brings together 36 contemporary photographers offering their illuminating and multi-generational perspectives on African history, culture and identity.
Spanning photography, video and installation, and engaging in diverse forms of storytelling, their varied bodies of works investigate the legacy of precolonial heritage, migration and globalisation that shape the continent’s relationship with the wider world.
Work such as that of Lebohang Kganye in which she inserts herself into the old family photos and Kelani Abass’s mixed media assemblage in which he inserts images and notes into an a family’s letterpress typecase are a few of many which stand out.
A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography exhibition book by Osei Bonsu, £32, £40 (hardback). Exhibition runs in Tate Modern until January 14.
