So tell us about the story of the band so far. When did you get together and what were your ideas at the time? Have those ideas changed much since?

Barry Bracken (Singer/Guitarist): Our drummer Daniel & I got together through our mutual friend Nigel back in Summer 2009. The three of us rehearsed with the sole intention of recording and releasing material. Gigging was not a part of the equation. So for about a year it was just the three of us in a room, we got a bunch of songs together and recorded what became the first Bouts album, released for free in Nov 2010. It’s a bit of a prologue rather than a debut album proper. Soon after that Nigel left for Canada and Daniel and I rehearsed White Stripes style for another year. Slowly but surely we racked up after idea after idea, song after song, before we found ourselves asking whether we should actually broaden this thing out. It was then we asked Colin (ex-Green Lights) to join. As soon as he did it became clear there was something there. A few of the songs that ended up on the EP took shape and then, just as we were about to go in to record with Shane Cullen in K9 studios, I asked Niall (bass) to join. He was in the band literally two rehearsals before we recorded the EP. After hearing the early playbacks in studio we had a “so that’s what we sound like?!” moment. And then any slightly detached notions of Bouts being a studio entity only evaporated…

How are you approaching HWCH? Do you have any particular hopes for the weekend?
No particular hopes for the weekend beyond playing a good show and checking out as many of the other acts as possible. We’re uncomplicated like that!
You’re also heading to CMJ in a couple of weeks, which must be very exciting. What are your plans for your time in the states?
Maximize the exposure in a limited time-frame. There’s a lot of extra bands in the city for that week and a lot of bills. We’ve five shows in total. We’ve managed to secure an additional three dates in addition to our two CMJ / MFI showcases. Our aim is to gig as much as we can over there. We’re delighted to have been asked and are going to throw the book at it and soak it all in. We’ve even printed a limited 100 cd compilation of our EP and double-a-side single to mark the occasion!

Do you think now is a good time to be a band (specifically a rock band as such) in Dublin/Ireland? What is the community like at the moment?
The community is really vibrant at present and it’s a great time to be in a band in Dublin. The demise of Richter is unfortunate, but between Popical Island, Out On A limb, a thriving electronic scene and the slightly “folkier” end of the spectrum (Lisa O’ Neill, The Spook of The Thirteenth Lock and The Lost Brothers) – to name just three – there is definitely something in the water.

Can you recommend three other bands people should go see at HWCH?

Girl Band, Nanu Nanu and Ginnels – three of the best new Irish acts around.

Bouts play The Workman’s Club next Thursday at 9.40pm. For more details about Hard Working Class Heroes, check out http://hwch.net/
