sunsplash reggae festival

What: Rototom Sunsplash 20th European Reggae Festival

When: 17-24 August

Where: Benacássim, Castelló, Spain

How Much: €60-240

One does not need an insatiable appetite for reggae to enjoy the Rototom Sunsplash Festival, although it would probably elevate the experience. Conceived in 1994 and initially geared towards a niche audience, the festival has grown without large corporate sponsorship thanks to its support by UNESCO. Stages are genre specific ranging from the Dub Station that boasts a 30 kilowatt sound system to The Ska Club. Putting the musical aspect of the festival to one side, the Rototomcircus offers a display of disciplines including juggling, acrobatics, slackline and the often polarizing clown. For those looking for a more reflective experience, the Living Energy section hosts a selection of places to meditate and experience some holistic therapies. Come here rude boy.

 What: Shambala Festival

When: 23-26 August

Where: Market Harborough, Northamptonshire

How Much: £129

The diversity and scale of the entertainment provided at the Shambala Festival is seriously impressive.  With over 200 musical acts, theatrics, cabaret, circus, stand-up comedy, a story telling yurt and even a posh spa it leaves the most discerning festival goer satisfied. It is also the thinking man or woman’s festival with a series of inspirational talks and philosophical debates made all the more interesting when one is well lubricated after a spell in the onsite secret drinking dens. Philistines beware! Enjoy the “purposeful hedonism,” the organisers’ advocate, whatever that means…
