Later this month, the art community around the city celebrates Dublin Gallery Weekend, which showcases the magnificent gallery art around the city. Having had an extremely successful inaugural year, Dublin Gallery Weekend returns on Friday 25th, Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th November with a programme of events and exhibitions that are accessible to all, whether you’re a hardened critic or a complete novice.
There are 36 galleries around the city taking part, including large cultural institutions like the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Kilmainham and the Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane on Parnell Square, to smaller, newer galleries with a reputation for featuring excellent international contemporary artists like the Kerlin Gallery on Anne’s Lane, the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery on Chancery Place or the Douglas Hyde Gallery in Trinity College, to artist-run spaces like Pallas Projects on the Coombe and Artbox on James Joyce Street. The event really does capture the entirety of Dublin’s art world, and works as a means to highlight the work they do throughout the year, as well as the special events they are hosting for the weekend alone.
As part of this year’s programme, there are a mixture of special talks from critics, “ask me anything” sessions with artists, art walking tours, film screenings, performances and of course extended opening hours, encouraging the curious to try out something new.
The full listings and a handy map for the weekend’s events can be found at dublingallerymap.ie or in the November edition of Totally Dublin. Below we have picked out a selection of highlights.
