Seachtain na Gaeilge sees an opportunity to see An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) with a special screening at The Chester Beatty Library. The award-winning film, set in rural Ireland in the early 1980s, tells the story of nine-year-old Cáit who is sent to spend the summer with a relative, Eibhlín, and her husband Seán. With her neglectful parents and an overcrowded, chaotic home, Cáit is a cautious and watchful child. Everything slowly changes that summer: unlike her parents’ farm, this one is orderly and well-maintained, while Eibhlín and Seán are attentive and thoughtful – even if Seán is somewhat distant at first. They offer her routine and most of all, loving care, which helps the girl to open up and enjoy her childhood. But like most good things in life, this too must come to an end…
