While Pancake Tuesday puts an annual spotlight on these old school treats, in truth we love them all year round. However you like them served, Dublin’s cafes and restaurants excel in dishing up fluffy, delicious platefuls. Enjoy them savoury or sweet, accompanied by everything from lemon, sugar and maple syrup to bacon, smoked salmon and fruit. We’ve selected a few of our favourite spots to dive into a stack or two in the city.
Alma on South Circular Road
There are a brace of delightful pancakey offerings to be enjoyed at Alma, the popular Argentinian run cafe on the South Circular Road, and we’re big fans of both. Their breakfast menu features a dish of stunning Buttermilk pancakes with Dulce de Leche, Brandy and Orange Mascarpone, seasonal fruits topped with orange zest, mint and toasted almond nuts. Enjoy it as is, or charge it up with some bacon, either way we think it’s one of the most stunning things we’ve ever tasted!
Also of note are the delicious Smokey West Corkey pancakes which offer a savoury twist on a classic. These beautiful buttermilk pancakes come paired with West Cork Smoked Salmon, Creamed Goat’s Cheese, two Free Range Poached Eggs, Fennel and Radish, alongside Pickled Beets with a Mustard Seed, Dill and Agave Syrup Reduction. It’s a consistent hit amongst diners at Dublin 8 cafe, and it’s not hard to see why.

Póg on Bachelor’s Walk
Who doesn’t love a cafe whose passion for pancakes extends to not just one but two menus packed with tasty Pancake Stacks and their own signature selection of Protein Pancake?
Póg on Dublin’s Bachelors Walk offers a nice choice of pancakey delights to cater for most tastes. Our current fav is The Star, featuring three layers of pancakey joy accompanied by Almond butter, white chocolate, strawberry, blueberry, banana, mixed seeds, and honey. Fill yer boots!
The Cheeky Piglet on Fumbally Lane
The cosy Brazilian-Irish run café and tapas bar continues to earn plaudits for its plentiful breakfast and brunch offerings, including those all important American Hot Buttermilk Pancakes. They come with delicious Streaky Bacon, two Scrambled Eggs, Homemade Mixed Berries Jam, Butter and Maple Syrup. Wash this substantial dish down with bevvies include specialty coffees by Two Fifty Square and Gurman’s Loose Teas.
For those with a sweeter tooth, dessert options include Strawberry Nutella Pancake, so simple yet so utterly divine, making the short trek to Fumbally Lane more than worth your while.

Andersons in Drumcondra
We were really sorry to see the Creperie on Drumcondra’s Carlingford Road close at the end of last year, but we still love the ones on offer as part of the Andersons breakfast menu at their renowned Food Hall and Cafe at the Rise in Glasnevin.
Their gorgeous American style pancakes come served with with a host of tempting toppings including delicious bacon, blueberries, strawberries, bananas and maple flavoured syrup.
Eathos on Baggot Street
Over the years Eathos has made an art out of pancakes, consistently serving up some deliciously fancy-pants Buckwheat versions, with a variety of beautiful toppings. This particular dish featured as a brunch special there a little while ago, and we’re still thinking about it. Vanilla Mascarpone cream, Strawberry, Mango Honeycomb, Toasted Coconut and Hemp, and gorgeous Almond Butter… If that doesn’t say lush, we don’t know what does!
