Now that the rain in Temple Bar falls mainly on the giant Sean Harrington umbrellas, Meeting House Square is a blank canvas for autumnal outdoor events. It’s the perfect home for ChoiceCuts chilled-out curation of BVRW2012, which is packed to the gills with triple bills, aftershows, art, and eats, both Irish and international. Here’s our must-sees – see below for a chance to win tickets.
De La Soul
Meeting House Square / October 18th / €25
The hip-hop heroes might have already graced the Button Factory this year, but their October 18th show is an entirely different beast. Dubbed First Serve, DLS’s Dave and Pos will be backed by a full live band – musically, more based in Motown that before, First Serve drips Avalanches sampledelia.
More! More! Take the MPC artistry of Onra, creator of our favourite party record of the age, the hazy funk powerhouse Long Distance, and add our very own Rejjie Snow (né Lecs Luther) playing a rare show in support and you’ve got a killer curtains-up for the festivities.

Derrick May
Twisted Pepper / October 20th / €15
His role as the joint founder of Detroit techno cements May as a living legend, but perhaps as important is his fusion of the soul of Chicago house into the techno template. Strings of Life remains as one of the most poignant, yet affirming tracks ever set to drum machine, while Nude Photo, produced under his heaviest-hitting nom-de-synth Rhythim is Rythim is a fitting anthem for the entire BVRW2012 festival
Hot 8 Brass Band
Meeting House Square / October 19th / €20
Having shot to fame as part of David Simon’s post-Katrina New Orleans study, Treme, and Spike Lee’s meditation on the same subject, Hot 8’s gumbo of marching band music with hip-hop, funk, and R&B will be gobbled up by the bowlful. As a bonus, they’ve all got class nicknames.
