Paris Photo is where the great and good of the photography world gather every autumn. Consider it along the lines of what Basel is to art or Cannes to film. It’s where galleries set out their stall and collectors consider their next purchase and/or investment.

It’s also where Mohamed Bourouissa picked up PhotoBook of the Year 2022 for his arresting project Périphérique where he chose to to appropriate the codes of history painting by staging scenes with his friends and acquaintances in the Paris banlieues where they used to hang out.

The Algerian-born French photographer first created this series in the mid-2000s staging confrontations, gatherings, incidents, looks, and frozen gestures all suggesting a palpably dramatic tension.
