What do you get when you combine the guitarists of pivotal Dutch post-punks The Ex with free jazz improv legends Ken Vandermark & Paal Nilssen-Love? You get a sonic maelstrom, a rush of blood from the heart and a buzzing in your ears for days. You get Lean Left.
Leading with the harshest of guitar noise, they are propelled along by the frantic post-jazz drumming of Nilssen-Love while Ken Vandermark’s piping saxophone weaves in and out of the noise, occasionally bursting into glorious melody before being swallowed again by the tumultuous ocean of noise. It’s a physically and mentally-captivating experience, where surrender is the only option. The sea makes perfect sense when you’re floating on the waves.
Newsflash: No Spill Blood will be opening proceedings tomorrow night! Now that’s a spicy meatball.
