In the face of the horrors currently taking place in Ukraine, it has been heartening to see the range of supportive initiatives being taken across the food and hospitality sector in acts of solidarity with the brave people there.
Recent efforts include the ‘Chefs for Ukraine’ dinner and online fundraiser organised by the teams at allta and Cloud Picker Coffee, which succeeded in harnessing the combined skills and talents of the city’s chefs, hoteliers, restauranteurs and producers in a bid to raise over €50k.
In the weeks since, there have been many other kind and generous gestures, as the city’s coffee shops, bars and restaurants continue to donate substantial percentages of their coffee sales and Saturday bar and restaurant takings to help this worthy cause.
A recent statement from the Lismore Food Company encapsulates the feelings of so many; “While on the one hand we feel powerless, we also want to do something to support the fundraising campaign for humanitarian aid from Ireland.” As part of their efforts, the artisan bakers are donating 50% of the proceeds from each tube of Lismore’s Irish Digestives to the Irish Red Cross.
