The biggest exhibition to take place in Project Arts Centre to date, Conjuring for Beginners will be expanding past the walls of the usual ground-floor gallery space and into the ‘Space Upstairs’ and ‘Cube’ – usually reserved for theatre. These extra square meters have opened up unprecedented possibilities for the participating artists – particularly for young Irish talent like Sam Keogh (you might have caught him at the NCAD Gallery’s Work Head exhibition last month), who’ll be filling the large volume upstairs theatre with his offbeat sculptural creations (pictured). More sculpture from Angela Fulcher, Ruth E. Lyons and French duo Daniel Dewar and Gregory Gicquel will be housed in the gallery space, whilst the Cube will be dedicated to new media works: light, sound and video installations from the likes of Turner Prize winner Susan Phillipz. Using theatrical spaces to explore theatricality and performance, a playful sense of meta-fiction pervades the programme, whilst totem-like symbols, illusionism and trickery are set to further distort our sense of reality. All going well, Conjuring is set to turn more than just the arts centre’s usage of space on its head.
