Boojum has been dishing up authentic Mexican food in the city for many years now. Marketing Manager, Paul McCullagh, talks to us about their flavoursome offerings, and the steps being taken to protect staff and customers in the midst of the current Coronavirus Pandemic.

Boojum has been a mainstay of the Dublin take-out scene for over a decade now. Tell us a little about the philosophy and influences behind your menus.

Our food philosophy is quite simple, use the freshest ingredients cooked using traditional methods to serve the best authentic Mexican food in Dublin.

Food provenance is so important to us, it’s not something we shout about, but we don’t use any freezers or microwaves in our stores. We believe in serving quality food and freshness is a key element of this. We source locally where possible and our menu of Burritos, Fajitas, Tacos and Nachos is fully customisable, giving customers the ability to tailor each meal to their personal preference or dietary requirements.

What do you think makes burrito dishes from Boojum unique?

Our food is famous for packing a punch when it comes to flavour, flavours that can’t be found anywhere else. The lengths people have told us they would go to for our recipes are entertaining and extreme to say the least!

Aside from being big on flavour, our portion size sets us apart too. Plenty of our customers take two sittings to finish one of our burritos or bowls! Of course, I can’t leave out our amazing employees, the Boojum experience has always been unique because of our incredible culture within the business. Our employees serve with passion and love what they do.

The Coronavirus pandemic has proved hugely disruptive for many businesses. What steps have you taken at Boojum to meet those challenges?

The Coronavirus pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on Irish hospitality industry. As a result, at the time of writing we have had to temporarily close 6 of our 9 stores in the city. In the 3 stores we continue to trade from we are operating through digital ordering only, with orders being facilitated through our own online Click ‘N Collect service and delivery platforms such as Just Eat.

Alongside our digital ordering, we have implemented robust social distancing measures and policies in these stores to protect our amazing staff and customers.

If a person were to choose to order takeaway food from Boojum on Just Eat for the first time what would you recommend for them?

It would have to be a burrito. It’s what we’re famous for and offers the full Boojum taste experience, conveniently wrapped tight in a soft doughy flour tortilla.

For the fillings I’d recommend our signature Mexican rice followed by both pinto and black beans, load it up with our marinated chicken, add some Salsa Verde for a little heat and then top it off with jalapenos, sour cream and cheese. After they have experienced that I’m pretty certain they’ll be ordering a second time!

What’s your own favourite item on the menu?

My personal favourite is our Chilli Con Carne, an understated menu item in my opinion. Tender slow cooked beef mince in a rich sauce with our own blend of spices. This, in a bowl, with our savoury Mexican rice, fajita veg, jalapenos and combined with sour cream and cheese to offset the heat a little, Amazing! Definitely on the cards for lunch today!
