So it’s finally here – Culture Night 2019. With some activities kicking off this afternoon, the city will be fizzing from 5pm with plenty to see and do. It’s a great chance to soak yourself in the cultural wealth that the city has to offer, and check out things you may not have had a chance to see and experience before. The Dublin Coffee Tour, a walking tour with Dublin Ghost Signs and a chance to explore the Department of Finance are already fully booked, but fear not, there’s loads going on… Our editor Michael McDermott will be talking to Lynda Brownlee at Hang Tough Gallery, this evening and we’ve also picked a few other items to whet your whistle here…
Stephen’s Green Area: Visit The Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) on its Opening Night
MoLI, pronounced ‘Molly’ after Molly Bloom, the James Joyce character, opens its doors for the first time this evening, and we’re reliably informed by those who’ve had a sneak peak that an absolute treat awaits. We recently caught up with Director Simon O’Connor who promises that “as people walk through MoLI they will discover that there is a whole hidden oasis behind the walls, beautiful exhibition rooms, a wonderful collision of old and new architecture, secret gardens and our wonderful Commons Café.” Why not check it our for yourself this evening? North Inner City Dublin: Float Down The Liffey at 14 Henrietta Street
If audience participation is your thing then mosey on over to 14 Henrietta Street where they’re showing ‘Float Down The Liffey’; a unique live music and film screening with DabbledooMusic. The film follows a musical journey through Dublin’s venues and streets at night with an accompanying live electronica score of brass, percussion and organs. Performances at 6pm & 7.45pm, first-come, first-served basis.
While there see if you can get your hands on a copy of ‘MUSEUM’, a book of poetry and photography that was inspired by the former Georgian townhouse, by renowned poet Paula Meehan and award-winning photographer, Dragana Jurišić.
Meanwhile the Centre for Creative Practices in Ballybough celebrates its tenth birthday with a special Culture Night installment of its New Voices of Ireland series, showcasing a variety of urban art forms by ten intercultural artists of various disciplines. This evening’s activities include performance, video, photography, sound, literature, sculpture and visual arts from artists such as Anca Danila; Csilla Toldy; Joe Ryan; Leia Mocan; Nasrin Golden; Nicola Anthony; Mirjana Rendulic; Romi Cruanas; Vukasin Nedelijkovic; Curator: Monika Sapielak, Production: Ian Oliver. 6pm – 10pm. The Liberties: That’s The Spirit: Whiskey Tours at Dublin Liberties Distillery
Calling all whiskey novices, experts and the just plain curious… Discover the science and secrets behind the whiskeys currently being produced in a new Dublin distillery located in a four-hundred year old building in the heart of the Liberties. Take in a tour and enjoy a selection of their finest spirits with a spot of whiskey tasting, followed by a chance to relax in the atmospheric bar while enjoying a selection of great cocktails, accompanied by some terrific music. Master Distiller Darryl McNally talked to us recently about their innovative work and you can read what he had to tell us here.
Meanwhile the Guinness Open Gate Brewery Taproom will be showing off some experimental beers not available anywhere else.
While you’re in the area, why not check out a live pottery making demonstration by experienced raku firers using ancient Japanese technology at Liberties College.
Elevate: Aerial Cirque at Central Plaza
Look to the skies for a heart-stopping, one-of-a-kind spectacle on the soon-to-be-opened Central Plaza on Dame Street. Metal meets muscle on the Dublin skyline in Elevate, a breathtakingly beautiful, gravity-defying show created and performed by Ireland’s leading aerialists Aerial Cirque, with music by Cork-based composer Peter Power and visuals by Bulgarian artist Petko Panchev. Performances: 8.45pm – 9.15pm, 9.30pm – 10pm, and 10.30pm – 11pm.

DLR Lexicon offers myriad activities under one roof including performances by artist Theresa Nanigian and Musician in Residence Lara Gallagher at 7pm, while “Where do You Think You’re From?” is launched at the County Library Tallaght this evening. An entertaining night is guaranteed as the library also plays host to masters of street and circus performance, The Fanzini Brothers.
