“The concept is about a fashion eccentric who has ventured out to a carpet store to decorate her fantastical house with various accessories and props.”
Photographer David Gannon reveals the story behind this month’s Totally Dublin Fashion Photoshoot.
“As my style evolved I wanted to challenge myself with more abstract concepts and weird locations. Therefore, shooting 10 looks in a carpet store was the next logical solution. I slid into Des Kelly‘s inbox asking if we could shoot there, they didn’t understand why but seemed up for it anyway. After a few weeks of back and forth we finally locked in a shoot date.
The concept is about a fashion eccentric who has ventured out to a carpet store to decorate her fantastical house with various accessories and props.
Sarah selected clothing which would reflect this theme and location – lots of texture, fringing and tapestry, which would be reminiscent of fabric used for home decor.
There were a lot of clashing fabrics to add a kitsch element.
A mundane trip to the store is turned into a wild adventure through our model’s charisma, poses, and the use of coloured gel light to give an other-worldy feeling. Sarah’s excellent styling brings the story together perfectly, selling the idea that Appiok is a powerful, creative fashion enthusiastic on a shopping spree.
We shot on a weekday so that the store wouldn’t be too busy, but we still had to shoot around customers which was quite hilarious.
We were lucky that the staff of Des Kelly’s were so accommodating that we could shoot virtually anywhere in the store, so we had unlimited creative freedom with locations and usage of props around us.”
