Bright-white clubbing, isn’t it wild?
If you live in Ireland, or have even just visited, then you’ve probably seen the effect our licensing laws have on nightlife here and you’ll probably agree it’s not exactly positive. The knock-on effects are wide-ranging, from the economic pressure on bars to the infrastructural strain that is obvious anytime anyone gets on a Nitelink in Dublin. More than that though, there are also serious consequences in terms of binge-drinking and personal health and safety.
Thankfully, there are people out there who are trying to get things changed. The folks over at Give Us The Night have been fighting the good fight for almost ten years now and they know more than most about what it’s going to take to get things sorted out.
Taking examples from what works for our European neighbours and mixing them with the harsh lessons learned about what isn’t working for us, they’re hoping that an alternate system can be worked out that suits everyone a little better, from the clubbers to the bars to the police and hospital staff.
What do you think? Let us know in the comments.
P.S. Rabble ran a very good interview with Sunil Sharpe of GUTN a while back, and a companion piece of sorts about the dearth of late night urban transport. Both add a little more illumination to the subject at hand.
