“It’s such a massive shame to see the likes of the Flea Market scrambling around looking for a space to create a community” – Wendy Crawford, Owner of Scout

Your creative highlight of 2018?

My Creative highlight of 2018 was working with Dublin illustrator and designer, Sally Caulwell. We commissioned her to create an illustration to celebrate Scout being in business 10 years. She was such a pleasure to work with and seemed to instinctively get what we were looking for. Starting my business in a recession, I’ve always insisted on fun and humour whilst working. This business can, I feel at times, take itself a bit too seriously, and I felt she captured us perfectly. Our anniversary tote bag, branded tissue and postcard were all designed by Sally.

Your personal creative goal for 2019?

I hope 2019 will be the year of many more interesting collaborations. More events, workshops and experiences in store. We are lucky to have a beautiful space in the city so I’d like to utilise it more. We recently invited Young Hearts Run Free into the shop to host an evening in talk with Mick Heaney, talking about growing up with his father, Seamus Heaney. It was a really special night of lovely conversation and all whilst raising money for Simon Community. More of this please!

You get to redesign or reimagine Dublin in one way, what would you do?

If I could, I’d make sure there was more space given to small startups and hold some of it back from big development. I feel our city is in danger of fast becoming boring and uninteresting as it supposedly develops. It’s such a massive shame to see the likes of the Flea Market scrambling around looking for a space to create a community and space for small business people, artists and makers, while the same, once community minded spaces are being torn down for student apartments.

How would you describe the Dublin of your dreams, in 18 words or less?

Cleaner. Better bicycle lanes. More market spaces. An end to ridiculous rents.

Three of your local creative heroes, people who people need to know about.

Siobhan Kane – Fearless leader of Young Hearts Run Free. Raising money for The Simon Community through music events and the arts since 2008.

David Hedderman – Artist & Musician. Recently exhibited in the Hang Tough Gallery on Lennox Street.

James Byrne – Any Other City Records. Discovering, inspiring and managing new bands and music in Dublin since he could press play.
