We’re relishing the prospect of some very tasty jazz at this year’s 12 Points Festival organised by Improvised Music Company which runs over four days and nights at the Sugar Club, Dublin. Catch a sneak preview of all 12 artists performing at this year’s festival here. Here are three to watch:
Besides Sally O’Brien wanting a pint of it, Julie Campiche brings an instrument, rarely considered in jazz circles, to the fore with her quartet. Employing multiple electronic effects on the harp, she creates sonic possibilities not possible acoustically. Wednesday September 5.
Ljubljana’s Container Doxa are the first audio-visual ensemble to perform at the festival. From abstract sounds and visual shapes, Doxa’s identity emerges, infusing contemporary club music with the protocols of free improvisation and jazz futurism. They claim to define their music with keywords; club culture, palm trees, futurism, modernism, hope, despair, and neon lights. They got us at ‘palm trees’. Sold. Friday September 7
Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper, both of whom have been on these shores in the last month, are reaching newfound audiences with their fusion style and broad appeal. In a similar experimental vein, this Trio boast distinct nods to hip hop grooves. This is 21st century jazz. Saturday September 8
