‘He’s out on the town trying to find trouble’, but Jamie T’s latest ode to laddish exploits tells the story of an embarassingly abortive night out. When he spits out belligerent lines about doing things to other people’s mothers it sounds less like modern day punk aggro and more like chancing cursewords in front of a teacher. This ragged but unthreatening Mr T is the antithesis of a million blow-dried, backcombed pop-starlets crowding up the Summer charts, embracing the schoolboy grime and dubious street wisdom with insistence that’s refreshing and persuasive. Jamie T’s raffish, shaky voice yodels the chorus, backed by a hungover football-fan choir in a call of war to his scrappy army. The video perfectly illustrates this crooked-tooth charm, following the singer and his South-London doppelgangers as they get drunk and lark while dressed as clowns.
