THE DAINTREE BUILDING
The Daintree Building is an award-winning mixed-use complex comprising of apartments, offices, studios and a café. The ambition of the Daintree building is to marry a sustainable agenda with a strong urban architectural presence and memorable spaces. It’s design favours sustainable materials including a multi-storey timber frame structure, green roofs, solar panels, a geothermal heat pump and breathing timber walls with sheep’s wool insulation. Rainwater is reused in the building and all finishes are organic. The apartments within the complex are all low energy design. The Daintree Building also houses the award winning Cake café, specialising in local and organic food. Open on Saturday 14 October from 11.00am – 5.00pm.
STUDIO FOR A STAINED GLASS ARTIST
The client, a stained-glass artist and keen gardener, required a modest light filled studio and wanted to open the back of the house to the garden. An existing single storey return was demolished and a large opening was made in the back of the house. The structure of the studio is made from horizontal and vertical interlocking planks cnc cut from 8 by 4 sheets of birch plywood with minimum waste. The planks slot together without the use of fixings or glue. The structure sits on a polished concrete slab with coloured glass aggregate provided by the client and is braced against a concrete slab alcove. The plywood structure carries the glass roof and wall of the studio. It provides shade from direct sunlight and shelving to display the client’s collection of glass objects. Oak pivot doors open the studio and main house to the garden over a reflecting pond and terrace. A mirrored room to the back of the garden contains the glass kiln. Visit on Saturday 14 October from 11.00am – 5.00pm.
14A PARK TERRACE
Park Terrace is one of a number of rare urban moments in the Liberties; low rise, high density, local, city centre, Dublin neighbourhood. This two-storey scheme came to be organised around a central lightwell with a private courtyard garden at 1st floor level. The lightwell extends across the full width of the house through the use of a glass roof over the corridor and stairs, and a glass floor to the 1st floor corridor, making the centre of the house the primary source of light around which all of the other rooms are organised. Check it out on Saturday 14 October from 11.00am – 5.00pm.
