Gods of Egypt

Director: Alex Proyas

Talent: Brenton Thwaites, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Gerard Butler, Courtney Eaton
Release Date: 17th June

In an alternative Egypt where gods live among men, the benign Horus (Coster-Waldau) enlists the help of a mortal (Thwaites) to regain his throne from the nefarious Seth (Butler), whose quest for immortality threatens to bring unimaginable destruction to the land.

This is a terrible film, easily one of the worst of the year. It looks dirt cheap despite costing $140 million to make, the premise is wasted in an incoherent script full of derivative set-pieces that bring to mind infinitely better movies, and the less said about the phoned-in performances the better. Worst of all, the worrying Hollywood trend of whitewashing ethnic roles is here taken to new heights, with only one speaking part on offer for a black actor, and it’s a real shame to see director Alex Proyas, a man responsible for a string of interesting projects, including 1998’s little seen but utterly sublime Dark City, involved with such offensive, soulless trash.
