If you’re an avid reader, an enthusiastic member of a local book club, or both, it can sometimes be hard to know exactly what to read next, particularly if your interests include everything from cookery to crime. Thankfully, help is now at hand through the Dublin Book Doctor, a new initiative from Dublin’s International Literature Festival.
Simply book an appointment at one of the Bookshop ‘clinics’ on Saturday May 16th or Saturday May 23rd and you’ll get a consultation with a specialist ‘book doctor’ who’ll take the pulse of your reading habits, after which they’ll prescribe a brand new book that’s guaranteed to be just what you need.
The Book Doctors involved have impeccable credentials and include such bibliophiles and published authors as Paul Howard, Ryan Tubridy, Sarah Bannan, Peter Sheridan, Selina Guinness, Gavin Corbett, Lisa McInerney, Henrietta McKervey, John Banville, David Shafer, Dermot Bolger, Susan Jane White, Eoin McNamee and Christine Dwyer Hickey.
‘Appointments’ with the Dublin Book Doctors cost €5 and must be booked in advance, with all proceeds going to Alone, the independent charity working with older people in need.
Bookshop clinics take place in Hodges Figgis and the Gutter Bookshop on Saturday May16th and in Books Upstairs and Dubray Books Grafton Street on Saturday May 23rd. Bookings and further details can be found here
