Christmas Pop-Up Round-up

Posted December 1, 2014 in More

Now that December is here and Christmas talk embargoes are lifted at TD Towers, we’ve done a little round-up of some of the spots that are launching special short-terms spaces and one-off events that should hopefully prove helpful in the hectic smush of Christmas present buying.

Love Supreme SMALLER

Love Supreme’s Christmas Market

The excellent Love Supreme café in Stoneybatter is getting in on the yuletide act by hosting a Christmas Store this month. Focusing on high-end design homeware and accessories from Irish and international producers, the market will feature producers such as Ferns-based Bean and Goose Chocolate, Two Wooden Horses from Delgany who make kitchenware, Little Luxe Tribe who make baby goods for ‘mini-fashionistas’ and America Village Apothecary who make hand-crafted botanicals. Call in to them at 57 Manor Street, Stoneybatter, Dublin 7. And if you’ve a caffeine-craving accomplice worth rewarding this year, they also have a bunch of paraphernalia including Hario glassware, Porlex grinders, drippers and beans from a variety of fancy roasters too. Located again at 5 Dame Lane, Makes & Brothers & Others is back with a range of new ‘Others’ as well as many of the favourites that were around last year, including Aēsop’s super-natural (not that way) cosmetics, Mourne Textiles and the Tweed Project. On coffee duties in the pop-up are TD faves Roasted Brown, while new additions include a beautiful range of cut glass and crystal from J Hills Standard (breathing life into the almost extinct Waterford industry) and minimal wristwatches from Notion Design.

DUBLINERS BOOK FAIR

Dubliners Christmas Book Market

Experience an epiphany extra early this Christmas with the James Joyce Centre’s Dubliners Christmas Book Market. On Sunday, December 14, independent publishers from across the city (many of whom are also hosting their own pop up book-shop on South William Street, see above!) including Tramp Press, Liberties Press and Swan River Press will gather to display their books (including Tramp’s remarkable Dubliners 100). In addition, enjoy readings of Joyce himself from Senator David Norris, Sam Coll, and Fighting Words, among others. If that isn’t incentive enough, come by to enjoy the mulled wine and sweet Christmas treats. Donations to Fighting Words, a charity that encourages students all ages to develop a love of writing, will be encouraged. More details here.

Christmas Cracker Flea Market 2014

Dublin Flea Market and Block T are once again joining forces to throw their annual Chrimbo rummage-fest, for all your pressie bargains and kooky tree ornament needs. Taking place over the 12th, 13th and 14th of December, the market will feature a huge range range of independent retailers selling their wares. It’s been packed with quality in recent years and the guys at Dublin Flea are confident that this will be their best event yet, with over 100 stalls featuring arts and crafts, second hand records, vintage clothes, furniture, general bric-a-brac and lots of scrumptious foodie treats. Their FB event page is here with updated details as the market nears.

The Christmas Cracker Flea Market takes places from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th December in Block B in Smithfield (that’s the one down the lane to the left as you face The Light House Cinema) from 12pm-7pm on Friday and 11am-6pm over the weekend.

TROP-POP-event

Sex Siopa / Tropical Popical Pop-Up

We’re well established fans of the Shawna Scott’s Sex Siopa since we talked with her late last year about her mission to bring design focussed body-safe products to the Irish sex toy market. With Sex Siopa living online, this hook-up with Tropical Popical means that fans can avail of some IRL taboo-busting sex toy advice (“How do those egg things work?….. Ohhhhhh”), as well manicures and excellently-named Panty Dropper cocktails at the event.

Those interested can get nailed on Wednesday 10th December from 6-8pm at Tropical Popical, 28 South William Street.

Shawlecool

Bernard Shaw and le cool Xmas Exhibition

Over 30 illustrators, designers and photographers will be hanging their works on the venerable walls of The Bernard Shaw. This keenly priced art from the likes of TD regular Fuchsia MacAree, photographer Cait Fahey and DJ-slash-printer Louis Scully will make a fetch gift for the design-conscious friends or blank-walled relatives, not to mention that 50% of the proceeds of sales go to Inner City Helping Homeless. Launch night is on Thursday 4th December (with complimentary bottles of Peroni to sweeten the deal).

The Bernard Shaw & le cool Xmas Exhibition runs from 4th December until 30th January at the Bernard Shaw, South Richmond Street, Dublin 2.
