Film critic turned film maker, Aki Kaurismäki’s new found career began in the early 80s and since then has ventured into the realms of shorts, documentaries and features. This latest feature tells the story of a young immigrant boy (Miguel) who arrives in the port of Le Havre in a cargo ship. Alone and lost, an elderly local man Marcel (Wilms) takes pity on the young boy and offers him the shelter of his home. Together the two must overcome the pervading deportation forces that relentlessly pursue the young boy.
A charming film of modest means but with a style that is positively old-fashioned, Le Havre explores the ever mounting issue of deportation through a strong character driven film.
