For one night only Joyce’s seminal short story is given a new operatic twist. Tapping into the deep vein of musical references that runs through The Dead, composer Ellen Cranitch and writer Tom Swift have created a refreshed pared back musical telling of the story. Four singers accompanied by a string quartet perform this exploration of life, love, mortality and personal epiphany.
2nd-10th August | Kyoto Arts Centre | 10am-8pm, free event
This is a performative video installation portraying how the narcissism of modern culture, selfies and our obsession with self promotion via social media has changed the way in which we live today. Curators of MART Ciara Scanlan & Matthew Nevin, worked alongside a film-maker, visual artist and a singer to analyse the process of ‘imitation’. Visitors and participants will be invited to copy and create their own versions of the videos and share on social media creating a viral thread of imitators.
New Orleans Night – Toot Sweet & Down South

With swampy Hammond grooves and a take-no-prisoners horn section, Toot Sweet pack some real punch, while expatriate New Yorker Ben Prevo is one of Eire’s best kept secrets ! This genre – bending guitarist, vocalsit and composer brings the honesty, integrity and simplicity of the blues to a varied repetiore of songs and instrumentals. Both cover vibes ranging from country and psychedelia to blues, funk and jazzy flavour.
Sunday 10 August | The Academy | 10.30pm
O Rappa (Pronounced “U Hah-pah”) is a Multi Latin GRAMMY Nominated Brazilian reggae/rock band from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They combine many styles such as rock, reggae, funk, hip hop and samba. O Rappa’s songs contain sharp protests against the social problems occurring in Brazil and the members of the band themselves are supporters of numerous social projects.
Sunday 10 August | White Lady Art Gallery | 1-3pm, free event
Tie-dye your tees with this special free art class in August! No previous experience necessary, just come wearing clothes you don’t mind accidentally getting dye on (accidents happen!). They will provide you with gloves and the dye, just bring along a t-shirt you want to tie-dye. All classes taught by Holly McGowan.
