Talent: Slavoj Žižek

Release Date: 4th October 2013

The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology is director Sophie Fiennes’ second stab at communicating the thoughts and writings of renowned Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalyst Slavoj Žižek, on the way in which ideology operates invisibly in our interactions with the world, most particularly in our enjoyment of movies. As in The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, Fiennes tries to enliven proceedings by placing Žižek in costumes and settings that recall the iconic films to which he makes reference, including The Sound of Music, Titanic and The Dark Knight. It’s a neat trick, but it tends to detract from the substance of what Žižek is saying. In fact, his eccentric delivery — in a thick, sometimes slobbering accent and amidst a flurry of tics and compulsive gestures — is sufficient spectacle in itself. The clips from the films he discusses disrupt, rather than enhance, our ability to follow the flow of his thought. It is a pity, because his observations are amusing and insightful.
