J.J Abrams’ reimagining of the cult franchise continues with a fast-paced follow up to 2009’s Star Trek. After a direct attack on Star Fleet back on Earth, it’s all personal as Captain Kirk (comfortably reprised by Chris Pine) and the team hunt down the assailant: a one-man terrorist cell with an incriminating penchant for black (Benedict Cumberbatch).
The adventure takes them on and off alien planets, running around our own Terra firma, as well as getting knocked around in the big nothing we call space. All locations are beautifully rendered, perfect settings for the non-stop action that dominates the majority of the film. There are a few breaks for plot, wobbly-eyed bonding and nerd-centric chortling, but not many, and they’re never allowed to break the pace. The strong cast arguably could have been utilised better but what we have here is a crossover hit for both sci-fi geeks and explosion-loving public alike.
