In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king. So goeth the tale of Terri Hooley, Belfast’s resident punk impresario and owner of Good Vibrations record store, which became a haven for audiophiles and grassroots punk movers at a time when the city was at its most violent and culturally despondent. Beginning when Hooley lost his eye in a bout of boyish sectarianism, to his founding of the label that gave The Undertone’s their Peel-assisted big break, right up to the shops eventual closure and reopening, the film upholds his belief that the minutiae isn’t important when music can bridge gaps and transcend communal strife. Slathered in seventies nostalgia and replete with humour, Good Vibrations provides a moving if admittedly slight portrait of the Troubles-era punk godfather. And yes, it has the tunes.
