30 years after war has devastated the planet one man traverses the dangerous wasteland that was once America. Eli is a lone warrior and the guardian of an ancient document that may hold the key to mankind’s survival. His appointed nemesis for the duration is Carnegie, mayor of a makeshift town of thieves and gangs who in the absence of law plunder the world’s remaining supplies and attack and kill other survivors. Only Carnegie is privy to Eli’s power which he is determined to exploit for his own gain. It’s not a particularly original undertaking for twins Allen and Albert Hughes whose last collaboration brought about the disappointingly dull From Hell in 2001. Although some star wattage in the form of Oscar-winner Denzel Washington may just be what is required to differentiate Eli, emerging amidst a recent outpouring of post-apocalyptic films.
