As arrogant as its narcissistic protagonist Nikki, a serial womaniser who relies on his good looks and seduction techniques to sustain his lavish lifestyle, whether Spread is intended as an indictment of the values of a disillusioned generation who live lives of excess and have meaningless sex, or a commentary on the vapid LA social scene where they reside is unclear, but it achieves neither.
Former prankster Ashton Kutcher is fairly credible here, though sadly in a role that requires very little from him. Nikki’s inability to form anything other then a sexual relationship with women is remedied when he meets his female counterpart, but he’s so shallow and smug that it’s as difficult to understand how anyone could be even remotely susceptible to his charms as it is to sympathise when his life falls apart. Nikki finishes as detached and elusive a character as ever, and his numerous casual conquests do not fare much better.
